Some pointers in this Windows/Linux File Sharing performance
What if I want to test from Linux...? OSX? BSD?

Tips
What I'd like to see in such testing would be at least:
- Network conditions (e.g. "this script has detected a connection of 1Gbit with Jumbo Frames capability")
- Testing for transferring a few thousand small files, as well as sustained throughput of a large file
