Ubuntu USB Install

Overview
Below are the steps I followed installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS + Amahi via USB drive.
What's Required
- Ubuntu 12.04 iso file (server or destkop). Download here.
- Linux USB boot creator. I used Universal USB Installer 1.9.1.1. Other popular utilities are Unetbootin and LinuxLive USB Creator.
- USB Stick. I used a 32GB SanDisk drive but any drive with at least 2GB should work. If you are using a drive with the U3 loader it may cause problems so I don't recommend it.
- Whatever hardware you're going to be running your server on.
Creating your USB Installation Drive
These instructions are specific to Universal USB Installer.
- Start Universal USB Installer
- Select the Linux Distribution from the "Step 1" dropdown. In this case you want Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop.
- If you are installing server, select "Try Unlisted Linux ISO" from the bottom of the list and it will work fine.
- Click "Browse" and navigate to where you saved the .iso file mentioned earlier.
- Select the appropriate drive letter to use. Make sure you select the correct drive!
- It will ask about setting a Persistant file size for storing changes. Leave the slider at 0 MB.
- Click "Create" and let the utility to its work. It will take a few minutes to create the drive.
Installing
- Plug the USB drive into the computer which you want to install Ubuntu.
- Set your BIOS or access your system's boot menu to select your USB drive to boot from. For my system and many others F12 brings up the boot menu. Select your USB-HDD as the boot device.
- From here on out you can basically follow the rest of the steps as outlined on the Ubuntu installation guide.
- If you have a system with multiple drives, Amahi will only recognize the root partition by default. Make sure to mount your drives so amahi recognizes all of them.
That's about it. I successfully installed server and desktop with this method and had no issues. I found that Amahi+Ubuntu 12.04 USB drive installation was far less problematic than installing Amahi+Fedora 12 what seems like ages ago.
